Nebraska Day Care Driver Arrested Following Heat-related Death of 1 Year Old

A day care van driver was arrested in Omaha, Nebraska, after a 1-year-old girl died due to extreme temperatures after being left alone in the vehicle for several hours, reported ABC News.

According to the news report, Nebraska police responded to a day care center on Monday afternoon for an “unresponsive child.” Authorities stated they believe the child was left in the van for approximately five hours. The child was reportedly identified by her family as Ra’Miyah Worthington.

The article states that Worthington’s temperature was approximately 109 degrees when paramedics arrived. She was transported to Nebraska Medical Center but was declared dead at the hospital.

Police arrested the van driver, 62-year-old Ryan Williams, and charged him with child abuse by neglect resulting in death. His bond was set at $50,000 during a court appearance on Wednesday.

Williams reportedly told police he unloaded the children from the van but was distracted by a young boy who did not want to get out and go inside the center. Williams stated he normally performs “sweeps” of the van but failed to do one on Monday.

The Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services temporarily shut down the day care until further investigations can take place.
