About the Endorsement:
STN is making available prior to or during its 2010 STN EXPO four workshops that are eligible for credit toward NAPT's 32-hour Special NeedsTransportation Training can be completed as a stand-alone certificate program or used to its highest impact as an endorsement to one of the existing NAPT professional certifications, similar in concept to the endorsements offered by the federal government’s commercial driver licensing (CDL) program. Course Descriptions for 2010:
*Special Needs Transportation SNT #101 (4 Hours) July 24, 8 a.m. to Noon
This cornerstone seminar begins by explaining the legal basis for special needs transportation and uses interactive discussion to explain definitions of transportation and related Special Education terms in accordance with the requirements of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) 2004; Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act and the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act of 2008; and the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act regulations. There is a specific focus on the characteristics of children with special needs and special considerations for transporting children with special needs, including a discussion of the Individualized Education Program (IEP) in relationship to the related services transportation. All of the requirements for participating in this course are completed on-site.
Child Passenger Safety Restraint Systems on School Buses SNT #102 (8 Hours) July 24, 1 to 5 p.m. July 25, 8 a.m to Noon
This class utilizes the revised curriculum approved by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to teach the proper use and installation of Child Passenger Safety Restraint Systems on School Buses. All of the requirements to participating in this course are completed on-site.
*Transportation Trade Show Report SNT #104 (4 Hours) July 27 during the STN EXPO Trade Show
This course requires participants to attend a school transportation trade show, visit with a minimum of 10 vendors and demonstrate knowledge about products specifically designed to promote safety for the transportation of students with special needs. Participants will be required to hand in a form/checklist to validate attendance/participation at an approved trade show and answer five (5) short answer questions prior to receiving credit. *Managing Special Needs Student Behaviors: Transportation Challenges SNT #105 (4 Hours) July 24, 8 a.m. to Noon
This course is designed to discuss behavior management strategies that work with preschool, and school age students. The emphasis will be on the different disability populations and best practices for supporting a safe school bus environment by utilizing effective behavior management strategies. This course is a highly interactive course and all participants are encourage to bring a scenario to problem solve.
* Cost for these workshops are $99 for NAPT members; $225 for non-NAPT members. Obtain more information on becoming an NAPT member for $75 a year.
