WARRENVILLE, Ill. — Every day, Durham School Services' bus driver Ruth Taylor drives children to and from Giant Steps, a non-profit organization that provides educational and therapeutic services to individuals with autism spectrum disorders. To help the organization celebrate Autism Awareness Month, Taylor organized a bake sale and auction, with proceeds benefiting Giant Steps.
Together with volunteers from her Aurora location and Durham's headquarters in Warrenville, Taylor secured donated auction items and baked goodies. The event, held on April 17, raised $1300 for Giant Steps.
"On behalf of the entire Staff and Board at Giant Steps please accept our sincere appreciation of your generous support during Autism Awareness Month," said Lisa Cummings Ewers, Director of Development for Giant Steps. "We are grateful for the services provided by Durham School Services to the students. Their partnership and contributions mean so much to the individuals we serve."
Durham staff toured Giant Steps facility in Lisle and learned how the donations would be used. "We are active members of the communities we drive for," said Aurora General Manager Chris Makrias. "It felt great, really amazing to do this for Giant Steps. This really reflects our company values in action."
In addition to the money raised, Durham also donated a new children's bicycle and four gently used computer monitors.
