The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration published today a recall notice for Blue Bird Micro Bird Type A school buses that fail to conform with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 110.
The safety requirement governs "Tire Selection and Rims" for all motor vehicles. NHTSA Campaign ID Number 09V450000 states that the loading placard on certain model year 2006 through 2010 Micro Birds manufactured between Aug. 31, 2005 through Sept. 27, 2009 list the inflation pressure for the spare tire as the same as the front tire. Instead, the placard should indicate "none" when stating the tire size and the recommended PSI of the spare tire.
NHTSA stated that the required PSI for rear tires could be higher than the front tires. As a result of improper inflation, premature tire wear could result and lead to tire failure, increasing the risk of a crash.
Blue Bird said it will provide a replacement tire and correct loading placards to all owners free of charge beginning on or about Dec. 9, 2009. The Blue Bird Campaign Number is R09PX.
