NYAPT Praises Passage of Driver Testing Law

The New York Association for Pupil Transportation celebrated the passage of legislation that will increase and enhance random testing of school bus drivers for the presence of drugs or alcohol. Specifically, NYAPT announced that the legislature has passed S.2587E/A.208E, sponsored by Senator Carl Marcellino (R-Syosset) and Assembly Member Donna Lupardo (D-Binghamton).

Bill to Delay Calif. School Bus Child-Reminders on Hold

A hold has been placed on California State Senate legislation that would extend the compliance date for school districts to install a “Child Safety Alert System” on all school buses, which would prompt school bus drivers to walk the length of the school bus at the end of routes to look for students.

NJ School Board OKs 3-Point Seat Belts Following Crash

The Paramus, New Jersey school board voted to require its buses to be equipped with shoulder-restraint-style (three point) seat belts for buses it is planning to purchase, for an extra $5,300 per bus. The board also said it will request bids for retrofitting all of its current buses with the safer-style belts, northjersey.com reported.
