Special Training Sessions at EXPO to Focus on Security, Dispatch Topics

The STN EXPO this year offers two informative special training sessions that will cover topics such as dispatcher training, surviving an active shooter on the school bus and use of force. These trainings require a separate registration and separate fee.

Saturday, July 8

Dispatcher Training

Taught by Pupil Transportation Safety Institute instructor Betty Hughes, this four-hour, interactive course will cover how student transporters can communicate professionally and effectively using the two-way radio, telephone; in writing and in person. The course also will outline specific techniques to improve customer service and build positive relationships with customers, be it parents or school district staff. Attendees will learn strategies for contributing to, and even directly influencing, positive employee morale, as well as how to document citizen and parent complaints.

Part 1: Survival Tactics for the Active Killer on a Bus

Presented by Jesus Villahermosa, Jr., founder of the safety and security consulting firm Crisis Reality Training, the first two hours of this special training will focus on how to mitigate the possibility of an active killer on a bus, and what to do if this type of incident occurs on the bus. The theme of this training will be “Awareness Before Defense,” although various emergency driving response options will be discussed, along with numerous survivable physical response options for the driver to survive such an attack.

Part 2: Defensible Use of Force on the Bus

During the final two hours of this special training, Villahermosa will lay out a clear foundation of what your rights are as a driver when it comes to defending yourself or your students while operating your bus. His background as a Master Defensive Tactics Instructor for law enforcement personnel, and as an expert witness in use of force issues, allows him to answer any “what if” questions attendees may have. Villahermosa will also provide an electronic template for any transportation agency that can be used for documentation when a use of force situation occurs.

Don’t miss these vital, relevant special trainings. Add them to your STN EXPO main conference registration at $149 per special training. The rate is good through June 9.

We’ll see you in Reno!
