Biometric Technology Gets on the School Bus

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. — As children start back to school, parents and school administrators share the concern that their children get on and off the right bus, at the right time and at the right locations. BlinkSpot now gives a simple, accurate and safe technology solution to assure parents, school officials and bus operators the real time confidence that kids is where they are supposed to be.

With over 26 million children riding school buses every day, school officials have faced the challenge of knowing which student are riding which buses and having real time information as to when and where each student got on and off. When a child is missing or in the event of an accident, having that information immediately available is critical in working with police, emergency responders and parents for successful outcomes.

“Every school year there are too many reports of students getting on the wrong bus, getting off at the wrong locations or worse yet not getting on or off the bus at all,” said Michael Hagan, BlinkSpot Vice President.

“BlinkSpot’s iris scanning technology makes knowing where children are fast, simple and safe for parents, school officials and school bus operators.”

When children board or exit the bus the BlinkSpot iris scanning technology recognizes the child and sends real-time reports to the school along with an individual email to each parent verifying the time and location of their child.

“As a parent, there is always that anxiety of not knowing that your child is safe as they go to and from school each day,” said Hagan. “Being able to get an email in real time that they are where they should be is reassuring.”

Developed in conjunction with 3M Cogent’s industry leading biometric identification systems, BlinkSpot’s iris scanning technology has an over 99-percent accuracy rate and is operated by Eye-D through a dedicated Verizon data portal.

“We all share in the responsibility of making sure that our children are transported safely to the right places, at the right times and on the right buses and this technology gives us the verification tools and peace of mind that we are keeping children safe,” said Jim Hey of Southwest Coach.

3M Cogent is a subsidiary of the 3M Company.
