Carrier’s IW-4 Moves to the Front of the Bus

SYRACUSE , N.Y. – Carrier’s new IW-4 in-wall bus evaporator unit is designed specifically to fit within the forward bulkhead of Thomas Built Buses C2 school buses. Thomas C2 buses are conventional buses operated in school districts throughout the country. The IW-4 expands Carrier’s existing in-wall product portfolio, which includes the IW-1 and IW-2 units, and is now available across North America . The new units are designed to be non-intrusive to passengers while offering high cooling capacity, environmentally sound refrigerant, and easier installation and maintenance than previous models. Carrier is a unit of United Technologies Corp. (NYSE: UTX).

Carrier’s in-wall evaporators can be matched with other Carrier components to provide a complete air conditioning system that accommodates various vehicle sizes, operating modes and climates. The IW-4 unit eliminates the need to install overhead ceiling mount evaporators in the front of the Thomas C2 buses, which now opens up the head clearance over the seats and provides for a cleaner OEM look to the AC installation. Carrier set out to develop a unit that would fit the limited bulkhead space without being intrusive to passengers and that would outperform existing equipment. The result is a unit that delivers high cooling capacity (55,000 Btu/hr) using non-ozone-depleting R-134a refrigerant and easier installation while eliminating the risk of condensate dripping on bus passengers. The design specifications of the IW-4 include a one-piece “drop in” construction to dramatically simplify and reduce the time it takes to complete the installation. In addition, the unit’s modular construction allows for easier access to internal components, making it easier to service, translating to less downtime, which is critical for school bus fleets operating on tight budgets.

Carrier offers in-wall product options in various configurations, enabling the units to be installed not just on Thomas Built Buses but also on buses produced by IC Bus, Blue Bird Corporation, and all other major school bus manufacturers.
