Columbus City Schools, Navistar Choose Energy-Efficient LEDs from Weldon for New Hybrid Electric Buses

COLUMBUS, Ohio – Local Columbus lighting manufacturer and electrical controls designer Weldon, a division of Akron Brass is the chosen supplier of energy-efficient, durable, and serviceable LED lighting products on the six new hybrid electric school buses joining the Columbus City Schools fleet at an introduction and training held at the Ft. Hayes Bus Compound (630 Cleveland Avenue in Columbus) on Wednesday, Aug. 4.

A light-emitting diode (LED) is a semiconducting device that produces light as an electrical current passes through it. LEDs use much less power than traditional bulbs and have a significantly longer life.

“School bus lighting primarily uses red and amber colored lamps,” explained Weldon’s director of lighting products Tom Barnett. “With incandescent or halogen lamps, a white light source is used and certain wavelengths must be filtered out to achieve the desired color. This filtering amounts to lost energy – 75% for red and 25% for amber. With LEDs, the color emitted is already the desired color; there are no filtering losses, so we can save that energy. A key example is Weldon’s red LED school bus warning lamp. A typical halogen warning lamp consumes 55 watts of power while an equivalent red LED warning lamp consumes only 10 watts; an 81% reduction in power use”

In addition to energy efficiency and lower power consumption, Weldon’s patented V-LED technology also increases student safety due to its extraordinary brightness and signaling power.

According to their website, Columbus City Schools transports some 31,000 children more than 45,000 miles a day, or 8.1 million miles annually.
