Blue Bird Corporation began a recall this month to address brake light switch mounting brackets that could cause the brake lights to illuminate continuously.
The model years 2013 and 2014 Vision conventional school buses manufactured from Jan. 10 through Nov. 1 of this year are thought to be affected. The Vision buses include those equipped with both diesel and Ford 6.8L propane engines, according to NHTSA recall campaign ID number 12V538000.
Blue Bird explained in the report that the brake light switch mounting bracket may have caused the brake light switch to be incorrectly adjusted at installation. Additionally, the brake light switch mounting bracket may deform when the driver allows the brake pedal to return forcibly.
This could result in improperly functioning brake lights that confuse other motorists and fail to warn them that the school bus may be stopping, which increases the likelihood of a rear-end collision.
Blue Bird added that dealers will install a new, redesigned brake light switch mounting bracket along with a new brake light switch free of charge.
