Director of Transportation for Las Vegas School District Named 2013 STN EXPO Co-Chair

Frank Giordano, director of transportation for Clark County (Nev.) School District serving the Las Vegas area, accepted the title of co-chair for School Transportation News’ 20th annual North American School Bus EXPO Conference and Trade Show scheduled for next July.

Giordano was named to head the district’s transportation department in 2009 after serving the previous three years as the director of vehicle maintenance and as a vehicle maintenance coordinator from 2001 to 2006. He oversees the transportation of 100,000 students on 1,500 school buses daily for the fifth-largest school district in the United States. He also indirectly supervises 1,800 transportation employees.

Giordano started at Clark County in May 1982 as a vehicle mechanic before leaving in 1985 for one year to teach diesel technology classes at the Area Technical Trade Center. He returned to Clark County in 1986, again as a vehicle mechanic, but quickly rose the ranks as a diesel mechanics instructor, vehicle mechanic leader and garage manager.

In 2001, he began implementing biodiesel into Clark County’s fleet. Two years later,  the U.S. Department of Energy recognized the district with a partnership award through the Clean Cities Coalition. In 2010, the district received another award from the American Lung Association and the Nevada Department of Air Quality that for efficiencies and innovations.

Giordano also saw one of his driver trainers win the 34th Nevada School Bus Roadeo last month at the start of the STN EXPO in Reno.

Giordano is the father of two sons, ages 18 and 20, and is active in “Ride for Kids,” a local event that helps support the Pediatric Brain Tumor Foundation. He will assist the STN editorial staff in developing the conference curriculum for the 2013 STN EXPO and will serve as a face of the on-site event next summer at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nev., the home of the STN EXPO for the past 15 years.

Joining Giordano as a co-chair is Murrell Martin, pupil transportation specialist at the Utah State Office of Education. Martin will become the new west regional director for NASDPTS this fall after the association’s annual conference in Memphis, Tenn.

The 2012 STN EXPO concluded on July 25 and consisted of four dozen conference sessions, a five-hour trade show and keynote addresses by actor and Iraq war Hero J.R. Martinez and by Mark Crosby, president and CEO of the Enterprise Wireless Alliance.

Next year’s event is scheduled for July 20-24. Stay tuned to www.stnexpo.com for updates as well as a call for presentation proposals.
