Georgia School District to Reduce Emissions with Diesel Oxidation Catalyist Retrofit Project

Gwinnett County Public Schools announced that is partnering with Donaldson Company to retrofit 45 percent of its fleet of school buses with DOCs using an $878,850 grant fro the Georgia Department of Transportation’s Congestion Mitigation Air Quality Program.

The 837 buses receiving the DOCs from Donaldson Company to replace the OEM muffler were manufactured between 1987 and 2002. Donaldson said the retrofits will reduce particulate matter emissions by 20 percent, and no maintenance is required on the DOCs after installation.

“Government regulations across the globe are driving diesel engine users to either purchase new vehicles or retrofit their existing engines to meet stringent emissions guidelines,” said Ted Angelo, general manager of Exhaust & Emissions at Donaldson Company. “Donaldson has been at the forefront of engine emissions reduction technologies. Our team of emissions experts worked closely with the school district and Yancey Power Systems to select the right solution to meet their emissions reduction targets based on funding, regulations and the size of the fleet.”

In a statement, Donaldson added that the the installs are expected to be completed by Yancey Power System by the end of 2012, when all Gwinnett school buses will be equipped with an emissions control device.
