Video surveillance manufacturer Safety Vision received a patent for its SafeStor digital storage device in a vehicle’s recorder. The company said this industry-first technology protects video from being damaged from harsh vibration and shock in mobile environments such as on school buses.
The patent for invention number 8,588,041 B1 is for a method of storing digital data in a moving vehicle that includes providing first and second digital data storage devices in a vehicle’s recorder. Jeff Schillinger, a Safety Vision engineer and police officer, invented the SafeStor. He said the technology resulted from work with clients to help them achieve an affordable, high-capacity and reliable storage device for onboard applications.
“Safety Vision will continue to develop mobile safety technologies until the best resolution is achieved, resulting in innovative, patentable solutions,” he added.
A company spokeswoman told STN that SafeStor gives the advantages of affordability as well as high-capacity and reliable storage listed by Schillinger “without any tradeoffs or sacrifices.” For example, she said other video companies use single media storage solutions, whereas SafeStor is a dual media architecture — one high-reliability device paired with one high-capacity device to create seamless transfer from the first to the second. According to the company, the result is video data that is never to be lost, and diminishes the worry over potential data loss.
