Drivers Strike to Leave 9,000 Students Without School Bus Service

The Hartford Courant reported that school bus drivers who have been pushing for higher wages from their company are planning to strike.

SEIU Local 2001 represents roughly 100 Hartford drivers who have been working without a contract since last summer. The drivers, some of whom make about $10 an hour for certain tasks, are protesting reduced hours and low wages

The one-day work stoppage would affect about 9,000 city students who take  buses to school. School officials said that students who cannot make it to school without transportation will be given an excused absence for the day.

“We are disappointed that this bus provider and its bus drivers have been unable to reach an agreement to avoid this unnecessary interruption of transportation services,” the superintendent said in a statement.
