Junot Noel Mack, a 36-year-old Berkeley County School District employee, was arrested and charged with third-degree assault and battery for allegedly assaulting a special needs student on a school bus, as reported by the Post and Courier.
The incident occurred between 8:17 a.m. and 8:25 a.m. Monday at Berkeley High School in Moncks Corner. School bus video camera footage captured Mack assaulting the 17-year-old student with autism.
Mack told the student to put away his toys. When the student didn’t respond, Mack then assaulted the student.
School officials have reviewed and deemed Mack’s act as an unprovoked assault on the student.
The student did not need medical attention following the incident.
Berkeley District spokeswoman Katie Orvin said officials are working with law enforcement and she added that “Mr. Mack is no longer with the district.”
Mack remains in custody at the Hill-Finklea Detention Center on $1,087.50 bail, per jail records.
