The dollar just doesn’t go as far as it used to, and apparently the same can be said for the Indian rupee.
The Times of India reported today that Banglore schools are raising school bus fares anywhere between Rs 100 and Rs 1,000 to make up for skyrocketing fuel prices.
“It has become almost impossible for the common man to bear the charges. We cannot pass on all the burden to the parents. So we bear most of it and give a marginal increase,” said Shaila John Wesley, manager, Baldwin Girls High School.
The school transports about 700 students via bus and had to increase the fee by Rs 100 per year. Other schools and private contractors are increasing fares by similar amounts as diesel fuel prices have risen 10 percent over the past year. One school, the Kumaran’s Children Home, was forced to rais bus fares by Rs 1,000 to make up the difference.
