President Obama, First Lady Announce Bullying Summit at White House

Affecting “every single young person in our country,” President Obama and First Lady Michelle Obama announced via Facebook that they will host a bullying summit at the White House on Thursday.

“Putting a stop to bullying is a responsibility we all share,” said the president in the video remarks.

Senior Advisor Valerie Jarrett will host a policy panel with issue experts including Catherine Bradshaw of Johns Hopkins University, George Sugai from the University of Connecticut, Susan Swearer-Napolitano from the University of Nebraska, as well as the Cyberbullying Research Center’s Justin Patchin. The event is scheduled for 10:30 a.m. EST. The Obamas invited students, teachers, coaches and parents to attend online by logging onto the StopBullying.gov Facebook page.

So, too, the invitation should be extended to school bus drivers and other school transportation personnel. The over-arching message was that bullying no longer should be simply a part of growing up, that it shouldn’t follow students from the classroom to the playground and beyond. School buses certainly apply.
