Roundup: School Bus Set on Fire, Official Warns Motorists with ‘Stupid’ Sign and More

This week, a school bus in Florence, South Carolina was set on fire while students and the driver were on board. It appears that a student passenger started the fire, although authorities are still investigating the circumstances and details.

The school bus driver safely evacuated the students and called both 911 and the Florence School District One transportation department. The school bus was completely destroyed by the fire. (Photo By: Curtis Graham/WBTW)

Highway Superintendent Fred Utter decided to take it upon himself to address speeding near a school bus zone in Davenport, N.Y. Utter used his own money to pay for signs with the phrase “Hey Stupid, Slow Down” after the Davenport Town Board approved the plan. He came up with the idea after a dangerous incident last August, when a speeding motorist had to slam on her brakes and swerve to avoid hitting a school bus that was unloading students, which left 120 feet of skid marks on the road.

“I’m just trying to get a point across. Sometimes you need to be blunt,” he said.

Bus manufacturer Thomas Built Buses will reportedly begin meeting with government officials to seek incentives for a possible expansion of their High Point, North Carolina site. The company estimates that the growth would create approximately 236 jobs and $10.5 million in capital investment.

A bus stolen from the Anne Arundel County Public Schools was recovered Tuesday. Police said that the bus had been stolen from a satellite lot and smashed through a gate at around 3:30 a.m. Other school buses in the lot had also been vandalized.

Later that morning, a police aviation unit spotted the school bus. The suspects had abandoned it.

Witness information as well as surveillance video helped lead to the arrest of two suspects, who have each been charged with first-degree burglary, theft over $100,000, destruction of property over $100,000 and attempted arson.
