National Hall of Fame Teacher Stephen Sroka to Present at STN EXPO

Trainer, author and educational consultant Dr. Stephen Sroka will address attendees at this year’s STN EXPO in a general session entitled “The New Rx for Pupil Transportation Professionals: Relationships and The Power of One.” He will discuss the disconnection many student transporters know all too well: Being left out of the larger discussion on education.

While his background is in teaching, specifically on student health-related topics, Sroka, an adjunct professor in the School of Medicine and Community Health at Case Western Reserve University, hopes to provide some tools to facilitate better connections throughout the transportation departments back home as well as throughout the entire school system and community.

“School bus drivers feel outside of the school and not a part of the team,” said Sroka. “We talk about the whole child, but what we need is the whole community. (School bus drivers) are far more valuable than they are treated.”

To make this point, Sroka will share real-life stories and integrate recent research to discuss why a school bus is more than a bus and how it can play a vital role in providing educational access as well as safety and stability for at-risk students.

“The first spokesperson for school district everyday is the bus driver. You are the face of that district every single day. That’s what the power of one is all about,” he added.

Sroka also will present a breakout session called “25 Free Brained-Based Strategies to Build Powerful Relationships.” It will also offer practical, free strategies school bus professionals can use to help improve school safety and to promote academic and life success for at-risk students as well as their colleagues and themselves.

“Change is inevitable, growth is option,” Sroka concluded. “You have the power of one to change the future.”

Dates and times for Sroka’s presentations will be announced at a later date.
