SAN LEANDRO, Calif. – Cleaire Advanced Emission Controls announced today that its President and Chief Technology Officer, Dr. Brad Edgar, has been awarded the prestigious Haagen-Smit Clean Air Award in the category of Science and Technology, from the California Air Resources Board (CARB).
Starting in 2001, CARB began annually recognizing and honoring outstanding individuals who have made significant contributions toward improving air quality through their commitment, perseverance, leadership, and innovation in the areas of research, environmental policy, science technology, public education, or community service. Scientists, professors, legislators, activists, business leaders, and other esteemed persons in the air quality community have been previous winners.
Dr. Edgar was the first employee at Cleaire Advanced Emission Controls in 2001. Cleaire manufactures emission control devices which reduce particulate matter and nitrogen oxides emissions from trucks, buses, and off-road equipment. There are currently over 13,000 Cleaire diesel particulate filters in service today. Edgar has demonstrated a track record of novel technology development, evidenced by being named as an inventor or co-inventor of eleven U.S. Patents and one patent pending, five of which are owned or licensed by Cleaire. In addition to patents, Edgar and the Cleaire team have been successful in developing and obtaining CARB verification for eight innovative diesel particulate filter systems for the on-road and off-road diesel retrofit industry.

The award is named after Dr. Arie J. Haagen-Smit, CARB’s first chairman and known by many as the “father” of air pollution controls. Through a series of experiments beginning in 1948, he discovered that the phenomena of photochemical smog, whereby emissions from vehicles and industrial sources react in the presence of sunlight to form ozone, a severe lung irritant.
