STA Education Foundation Announces Local Scholarship Awards

The Student Transportation of America Education Foundation (STAEF) awarded $1,000 scholarships to 16 high school students from the greater Charleston area.

Scholarships were awarded to high school seniors who displayed pride in their community and are choosing to attend a college or university in South Carolina.

The cornerstone of STAEF’s fundraising efforts for these scholarships is the foundation’s partnership with the PGA Nationwide Tour Championship at Daniel Island held in October. The STAEF was the host organization for the event in 2009 and 2001 and will continue that partnership in 2011. The goal is to increase national awareness of the foundation so it can provide additional scholarships in the coming years to high school seniors in communities throughout North America, including the Lowcountry.

An awards luncheon was held at the Daniel Island Club to recognize all of this year’s award winners. The scholarship recipients are Grace McLeod from Academic Magnet High School; Kaylie Fehr, Mary Runey and Ashleigh Van Metre from Bishop England High School; Morgan Jones and Kimberly Stempert from Fort Dorchester High School; Quintessa Fishburne, Emily Moeller, Christopher Piedmont, Terry Tran and James Workman from Hanahan High School; George Alford, Lauren Brooks, Alexander Franchak, Stewart Gress and Atlee Lenes from Wando High School.

“We want to congratulate the scholarship recipients on their tremendous success and strongly encourage members of the local community to support the STA Education Foundation through its events so that we can help even more students in the area pursue higher education,” said Denis J. Gallagher, CEO of Student Transportation of America, which is North America’s third-largest provider of school bus transportation services. “STAEF is about helping students and the more support we receive through sponsorships and ticket sales at the Nationwide Tour Championship, the more local students we can help reach their goals.”
