HIGH POINT, N.C. — Thomas Built Buses, along with Detroit, will feature the new Detroit DD8 Medium-Duty Engine for the first time in the pupil transportation industry at the STN Expo on Tuesday, July 11 in Reno, Nevada.
The Detroit DD8 engine is a 7.7L inline 6-cylinder medium-duty engine with specific development for the Thomas Built Buses Saf-T-Line HDX. It boasts a horsepower range of 260-300HP and a torque range of 660-860 Lb-ft.
The DD8 will decrease a fleet’s total cost of ownership with longer maintenance intervals and improved fuel efficiency. In addition, vehicles equipped with the DD8 will feature Detroit Connect Virtual Technician remote diagnostic service. Virtual Technician helps fleets make informed maintenance decisions, so they only service their vehicles when needed.
In case a vehicle needs to go into the shop, Virtual Technician, with the backing of the experts at the Detroit Customer Support Center, provides access to the most in-depth information available to get the vehicle repaired as accurately and quickly as possible, improving uptime.
“We are excited to introduce the Detroit DD8 engine to the pupil transportation market,” said Caley Edgerly, president and CEO of Thomas Built Buses. “We are hearing a lot of excitement for the upcoming Detroit DD5 engine suited for our Saf-T-Liner C2. Now, with the DD8 engine coming on board, our customers can experience industry-leading power, performance, and fuel efficiency, as well as the advanced telematics of Virtual Technician for the Saf-T-Liner C2 and now the Saf-T-Liner HDX.”
The Detroit DD8 will be available for order in 2018.
