After being delayed due to weather, the 43rd Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition was held Saturday and Sunday in Tulsa, Okla., as part of the NSTA’s Annual Meeting and Convention.
Initial results were posted online by NSTA, which hosts the event. With exact rankings unavailable at this report, small bus winners were John Labus, Mary Slate Russell Altizer and Janet Turner. Transit winners were Antonio Perez, John Welsh, Catherine Francis, Concepcion Garza, Benny McDowell, John Choffel, Duane Peterson, Lowell Weber, Brian Lyons and David Smith. Winning the conventional category were Larry Hannon, Billy Wiseman, Michael Graham, Timothy Sclieker, Gerry Crane, Ed Rollins, Jannette Visser, Mollie Cornwell, Brian Newhouse & Charles Mantie.
The best school bus drivers from the U.S. and Canada compete for top honors and recognition. The event begins with a written test, then contestants get behind the wheel of a bus to put their driving skills to the test. Drivers have the opportunity to demonstrate their professionalism, skill, and dedication to pupil transportation. The event culminates with an Awards Banquet and Ceremony, where the winners of the competition are announced.
