Atlanta-Based Cummins Dealer Starts New Diesel Engine Training Program

Cummins Power South is now offering a three-month graduate program to provide hands-on training on Cummins, Inc. heavy- and medium-duty diesel engines, including the ISB6.7 and ISL9 for school buses.

Bill Sigmund, director of technical support at Cummins Power South, told STN that CPSUniversity (CPS) covers all of Cummins’ diesel products through the 2010 model year. The ISL G turbo-charged or air-cooled CNG or LNG engine is not a part of the training, though he added that Cummins Power South does offer a training course for that application.

The first 12-week CPS class is based at the state-of-the-art CPS Technical Service Training Center in Tampa, Fla. THe first CPS graduated on April 26 and future classes are scheduled for May 20 and Sept. 4, for the latter the company is currently taking applications.

Eight students are accepted per class, and the students must have completed approved VoTech diesel technology programs or have related worke experience, including military training. Upon graduation, students offered employment by Cummins Power South must also agree to a three-year commitment with the company and are qualified on Cummins Mid-Range and Heavy-Duty products with model years 1991 through 2010.

The company said CPSUniversity is the vision of Geoff Walker, vice president of operations and distribution. The goal is to increase technician recruitment and training, and to support the company’s long-term strategy of “Lead with Service,” a model of what once existed as Cummins South University. The company added that CPS was redesigned to provide further specialized training to graduate technicians who would then be committed to the program upon graduation and can choose their area of expertise.

Sigmund added that future CPS classes will cover Cummins diesel engines through the 2013 model year.

Established in 2006, Cummins Power South is a joint venture distributorship within the Cummins North American Distributor System. Cummins Power South specializes in the sales and service of all Cummins engines, generators and related products within Georgia, Florida, and Chattanooga, Tennessee and selected areas of the Caribbean.
