Philip Lanoue, superintendent of the Clarke County School District in Athens, Georgia received the Superintendent of the Year award from the American Association of School Administrators at the National Conference on Education held in San Diego last month.
The award celebrates the efforts of public school superintendents across the U.S. and is co-sponsored by AASA, Aramark and VALIC.
“To be recognized by your peers is something I honor but more importantly, it’s great recognition for the work being done in our community,” said Lanoue.
Under his leadership Clarke County School District has been recognized as a Title I Distinguished District for being Georgia’s number one large district in closing the achievement gap. The district has also received several awards for being a “model technology school district.”
According to Cathy Benson, transportation director at the district and a winner last fall of an-all expenses paid trip to the TSD Conference, Lanoue’s leadership and support extends to the transportation department.
“Dr. Lanoue is a great leader. He is most supportive of our department. He has been to many of our department training meetings and celebration recognition’s. Because of his support and attendance at these department events, employees appreciate his leadership,” she said.
Lanoue and Benson previously worked together at the Cobb County (Georgia) School District. They both moved on to Clarke County in July 2009.
