Cummins Marks Production of 1.5M Engines, Recognizes JEP Employees

Cummins Inc. announced the production of the 1.5 millionth engine at its Jamestown Engine Plant (JEP) in Jamestown, N.Y. Established in 1974, the JEP (pictured at left) is one of the top five heavy-duty diesel engine producers worldwide, with production in recent years often exceeding 100,000 engines per year.

The plant also remains one of the company’s largest manufacturing facilities, as it accounts for 12 percent of Cummins total engine production in 2012.

In celebration of this major milestone, Cummins executives joined Jamestown employees today to acknowledge their efforts in this achievement — as well as in giving back to their community. The company stated that JEP employees are “committed to a team-based work system” where the key values of trust, growth, equity and flexibility encourage everyone to work together to achieve excellence.

Last year, 42 percent of Jamestown employees pitched in at various community events and also made a significant donation to the United Way. Additionally, they have volunteered for 800-plus hours overall, providing environmental support to the local lake for the past three years.

This year, the company will continue to boost its community involvement in order to meet its 2013 goal of 62-percent employee community service.

“These key values guide how we work together as a plant, and as a team,” said Mike Abbate, plant manager. “Employee commitment to these core concepts allows our plant to meet ever-changing business conditions.”

He noted that Cummins officials credit much of their success to the hard-working employees that commit themselves every day to provide products and service that meet or exceed customer expectations.

Jamestown is one of the company’s 28 manufacturing locations globally and produces many of the Cummins Heavy-Duty engines including the ISX15, the ISX12 and the ISM diesel engines. The plant is also in full production with the new Cummins Westport ISX12 G Heavy-Duty natural gas engine, which is widely used in school bus fleets, along with its two clean-diesel engines — the ISB6.7 and the ISL9, which replaces the ISC8.3.

The large manufacturing facility, which covers more than 1 million square feet, is the largest private employer in Chautauqua County, N.Y., with roughly 1,400 employees. Headquartered in Columbus, Ind., Cummins employs approximately 46,000 people worldwide.
