School bus contractor Durham School Services donated a school bus to Huntsville City Schools in support of the district’s Summer Feeding Program.
The Summer Feeding Program started three years ago to help members of the community who struggle to obtain a proper amount of food on a daily basis. The program is funded through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food and Nutrition Service, allowing Huntsville City Schools to provide three hot meals for free throughout the summer.
“During the school year, we provide breakfast and lunch for our students. Unfortunately, many students and their families do not have the means to receive an adequate amount of meals during the summer months,” said Dr. Casey Wardynski, superintendent of Huntsville City Schools. “This generous donation will allow us to provide free meals to even more children and their families than previous years.”
Durham said that donating to the Summer Feeding Program highlights the company’s commitment to the community that supports them, and is in line with its core values of safety, customers, people, community and excellence.
“We are proud to donate a bus that will assist the efforts of Huntsville City Schools to feed the children in our community this summer,” said Wendy Daniel, general manager for Durham School Services. “This partnership is meaningful to us at Durham, because it allows us to continue serving our students in a meaningful way during the summer months.”
Included in the donation was a $2,500 check from Durham to help refurbish the bus. Durham partner Bridgestone Tires also donated a new set of tires.
