STA Orders More Than 100 Propane-Fueled Buses for Pennsylvania School Districts

Student Transportation of America placed an order for more than 100 propane autogas school buses for two of its school district customers in Pennsylvania.

The third-largest student transportation services provider will provide 80 new propane-fueled Blue Bird Vision buses with the Roush CleanTech fuel system to the Gateway School District in Monroeville, just east of Pittsburgh. Thirty of the same buses are ordered for the Bristol Township School District, near Philadelphia.

STA in mid-April announced it gained the new contract with Gateway SD. Company officials said the contract has an initial term of six years and is expected to save the district about $372,000 compared to the current estimated transportation cost for the 2013-14 school year.

The company said Gateway is the first school district in Western Pennsylvania and the second in the state to switch from diesel fuel to the new propane autogas system from Blue Bird and Roush.

STA officials also said in a release that deploying more alternative-fuel vehicles, lowering its fuel cost and reducing carbon monoxide around schools is part of the company’s “less pollution, less dilution” program.
