Twelve-year-old Jazmin Hernandez of Glenwood, Arkansas was hit Monday afternoon when a vehicle failed to yield to her stopped school bus, and died the following day. The driver of the sports utility vehicle was identified Wednesday as Dwight L. Moody, 88, of Delight.
The Arkansas State Police (ASP) said the vehicle was traveling westbound along U.S. Highway 70 near Salem and flew past the Kirby School District bus that was in the process of unloading students. The bus had its flashing lights activated and stop sign extended, according to investigators. The state prosecuting attorney has yet to decide whether criminal charges will be filed against Moody.
Also on Wednesday, the victim’s father spoke about stepping up prevention efforts at school bus stops.
“Improving signs, bus stop signs, everything. Whatever they can do in their power to improve security measures and to not let this happen again. You know, don’t let another child die,” Miguel Hernandez told a local news station shortly after making funeral preparations for his daughter.
The ASP investigation continues at this writing.
