Daimler Trucks North America is recalling several units of Thomas Built Saf-T-Liner HDX school buses to fix an intake air grid heater that may short circuit.
The NHTSA recall is an expansion of a previous campaign. The school buses affected have model years 2005 through 2012 and are powered by MBE900 diesel engines that are compliant with EPA 2004 and 2007 emissions requirements. The manufacturing dates are from June 23, 2004 through March 15 of this year. Daimler Trucks, the parent company of Thomas, said the short circuited grid heater could result in a fire.
The company will notify customers this month that dealers will repair the buses free of charge. A total of 43 vehicles are affected by the Daimler recall, including Freightliner M2, Sterling 7500/8500 and Sterling Acterra trucks.
