The family of Carl Johnson, a 20-year-old special needs student, is demanding answers from the Detroit Public School Community District after the student died on his school bus after having a seizure, reports Fox2Detroit.com.
Johnson’s family said he would normally be transported via a medically equipped school bus, but a standard bus picked him up Tuesday for the first day of a summer program at Jerry L. White Center.
An aide was reportedly on the bus when Johnson suffered the seizure, but his family alleges the Trinity Transportation employee was not trained in and did not perform CPR. A school nurse performed CPR on Johnson only after the bus arrived at the center.
DPSCD said there was nothing in Johnson’s records indicating he needed a medical bus.
The family will view video from the school bus on Monday. They alleged a doctor told them Johnson’s brain was deprived of oxygen for an hour before he received medical help, so even if his body had survived, his brain was supposedly dead.
