The Cañon City Police Department in Colorado is stepping up enforcement of state law and municipal codes regarding school bus signal violations at stops, according to the Daily Record.
Drivers are to completely stop their vehicles when school bus lights are flashing for the loading and unloading of students, no matter which direction the driver is traveling.
The only exception to this is when the school bus is stopped on a divided highway, the report explains, and then vehicles in the oncoming lanes (on the other side of the median) may continue without stopping.
Failure to comply is punishable by a six-point driving violation against a Colorado driver’s license and a fine of up to $1,000.
Confusion over state and local laws is often cited by safety experts as reasons why motorists ignore stopped school buses.
