Texas School Bus Driver Suffers Medical Emergency, Student Hailed as a Hero

A school bus driver at Schertz Cibolo Universal City School District in Texas suffered a medical episode behind the wheel earlier this week, reported the KSAT ABC News Station.

The driver was transporting children from Schlather Intermediate School in the afternoon when the bus reportedly rolled into a homeowner’s yard after the driver’s medical episode.

No children were reportedly injured.

A fifth-grade student on board is being lauded as a hero, after engaging the emergency brake button to stop the vehicle before it crashed into the house. Then, the student engaged the air door release switch to manually open the door.

The bus driver reportedly had his mandated physical exam in September, as required by the Texas Department of Education, and the district was unaware of any medical issues with the driver. However, the bus driver told the students he had a medical condition, it was reported, and taught them how to stop and evacuate the bus if an emergency situation was to occur.

The incident is still being investigated by the district’s transportation department.
