School Bus Contractor Takes Sting Out of Morning After

The Chicago Tribune reports on one way to get your school bus drivers to show up to work on Mondays, especially those that follow the biggest game of the year.

First Student offered a paid holiday of Super Bowl Sunday to members of Teamsters Local 777 who drive routes for Chicago Public Schools. The contract covering 115 employees was ratified soon thereafter.

“To get paid for a holiday, you always have to work the day before a holiday and the day after,” said Jim Glimco, the union’s president. “This ensures that everyone shows up the day after Super Bowl Sunday.”

The idea was apparently the brain-child of Bob Rutkowski, general manager for First Student.

The new contract also includes paid funeral leave, new vision and life insurance coverage and wage increases.
