Durham School Bus Driver Earns First Place at Mass. Roadeo

WORCESTER, Mass. — School Bus Driver Shawn Sawyer, from Durham School Services – a leading provider in student transportation – earned first place at the Massachusetts State Road-e-o.

The competition provides the opportunity for school bus drivers from across the state to put their driving skills to the test with a written exam and driving course. The purpose of the competition is to increase the safety and operational skills of school bus drivers, and recognize their driving abilities. Volunteer judges were in attendance to help score the drivers accordingly.

“We’re so proud of Shawn’s accomplishment. It is very well deserved,” said Omar Velazquez, general manager for Durham. “He’s an excellent driver with a focus on safety, and always is determined to be the best driver he can be. This honor shows his amazing dedication to getting our students to school safely, on time and ready to learn.”

Drivers from eight different companies participated in the Massachusetts State Road-e-o.

“We’d like to congratulate Shawn on his achievement. The competition had outstanding participants from across the state,” said Lynell Peterson, managing director of School Transportation Association of Massachusetts. “As the first place winner, Shawn will receive an all-expense paid trip from the School Transportation Association of Massachusetts to represent Massachusetts in the NSTA’s International Safety Competition.”

Shawn is set to compete in the 47th Annual School Bus Driver International Safety Competition held on July 16th in Indianapolis, Indiana. The International Safety Competition is hosted by the National School Transportation Association (NSTA).
