Round up: School Bus Races, Seatbelt Requirements and More

As part of the Bojangles’ Summer Shootout Series, regional principals burned rubber in supercharged school buses at the Charlotte Motor Speedway. The high-octane race tested the abilities behind-the-wheel of North Carolina administrators to see who’d earn bragging rights as crowned champion of the Principal School Bus Showdown.

School bus contractors in Massachusetts voiced their concerns over recent efforts to require seatbelts on buses, citing impacts to cost and compliance. Lawmakers were not dissuaded from their agendas by the pleas, and continued forward with bills that demand that seatbelts be included on buses statewide.

Bus drivers at a Maine school have helped develop a literary plan that functions as a method to keep students aboard area school buses calm and also teach the youngsters how to read. In conjunction with the local library, bus drivers hand out books that older children read to the kindergarteners and first-grade students during the rides to and from school.

A school bus monitor in Orange County, Florida was fired after a video showed him attacking two students. While the former monitor wouldn’t comment on the incident, school board members voted to terminate the perpetrator from his position after reviewing the video.
