Roundup: School Board Hops on Board, A Bus Driver Drives Recklessly

It should come as no surprise that school bus safety is a concern for all parents. To learn first hand the happenings on the local school buses, members of a West Virginia school board took rides to see what exactly is going on in and around these transport machines. Speaking to both parents and students, the board members gained insight to the recklessness of drivers when confronted with buses. Mostly, it comes down to speed and people just need to slow down, especially when children are present. They are the future, a grandparent pointed out. “There’s been times where people just swerve off the road. People just need to slow down and respect the fact that all these little kids are getting off the bus instead of worrying about where they’re going and passing the school bus with the stop signs out,” said one parent. The school board chairman believes that safety is first and foremost. “It’s just to be sure that the children arrive safely and go home safely,” said the chairman.

Showing that submitting to anger can only lead to bad decisions, a school bus driver has come under fire for choosing to tackle a discipline problem on the bus by slamming on the brakes. The brash action injured a number of students as they were transported to school, sending them to the ER. Parents went into a fury after receiving frantic phone calls from their children about the injuries they sustained. Most of the students were treated for small injuries. One student received a minor concussion as a result of the driver braking violently after a boy, in an argument with other children, refused to sit down, students reported. Parents are calling for a full investigation. “If he gets that angry to slam on the brakes that hard to hurt that many kids then he needs to be evaluated,” said the superintendent, but couldn’t comment further while the incident was still under review.

Once again, the breadth of human depravity has been shown to have no limit as a school bus driver was indicted earlier this month on four counts of making child pornography. These charges come after the 70-year-old was already caught on camera touching and fondling students under his care. If convicted on just one of the charges of child porn, the accused will be given a mandatory sentence of no less than 15 years. It should be noted that this case is separate from the previous assault case and involves different victims. The driver allegedly produced the child pornography on four dates in 2012 and 2013, documents listing three victims, all girls between the ages of 8 and 10.

A woman is dead while her 9-year-old daughter fights for her life after their pickup crashed into a school bus. The California Highway Patrol says the bus was traveling north when a truck in the southbound lane crossed the double-yellow line and drove directly into the path of the bus. The driver wasn’t able to maneuver away and collided with the truck, killing the woman instantly. The 9-year-old girl was transported to an area ICU. Roughly 20 students were on board the bus at the time of the crash. Three were treated for minor injuries. While officials speculate as to the causes of the crash, it’s too early in the investigation to determine the reasons. “It’s not that heavily travelled, you know it’s the lower foothills, it’s a windy road. I don’t want to say it’s a dangerous road but you have to pay attention to the kinds of curves we have up here,” said one investigator.
