Predictive Stop Arm System Demo Coming to STN EXPO Indy

Attendees at the inaugural STN EXPO in Indianapolis next month can witness a demonstration of how radar technology and predictive analytics can increase the safety of students who cross the street to and from their school bus stops.

Safe Fleet and Seon will showcase their Intelligent Perimeter Safety Solutions, following the end of conference workshop sessions on the afternoon of June 9. The live event will feature a stopped school bus engaged in a simulated student pickup and drop-off, as another vehicle approaches it.

Intelligent Perimeter Safety Solution includes a predictive stop arm that notifies school bus drivers and students when the risk of an illegal passer is detected, based on the speed of approaching vehicles. The system also sounds an alarm to alert students when it is not safe to cross the street. It even detects if a motorist may pass on the right side of the bus—a particularly dangerous maneuver.

Inside the bus, drivers see a series of visual alerts when it is safe for students to cross. Safe Feet said that it is designed to mitigate driver distraction, with reduced false alerts.

As reported in the May 2019 issue of School Transportation News, Hopkins School District in Minnesota is currently testing the Intelligent Perimeter Safety Solution.

“The school bus industry has been trying to effectively address the School Bus Danger Zone for years,” says Tom Brodsky, vice president of Safe Fleet’s advanced technology group. “The use of mirrors, stop-arms, video surveillance, operator training, public safety announcements, and policies and procedures, have helped increase safety outside the bus. But more must be done if we want to reduce the number of school bus-related injuries and fatalities to zero.”

The demo will be held on a closed street at Victory Field, within easy walking distance of the JW Marriott. Shuttle buses will also be available to transport STN EXPO attendees to and from Victory Field.
