School bus contractor Durham School Services welcomed Mayor Tom X. Lazio of Ottumwa, Iowa into its local operations as he saw the inner workings of how the company transports over 2,500 students each day for the local district.
Durham said Lazio met on Thursday with Chief Operating Officer Mary Leonard and local employees to witness first-hand the company’s safety procedures, school bus technology and preventive maintenance program at work.
“While the exterior of the yellow school bus may look the same, there are many new enhancements,” Mayor Lazio said. “From watching the pre-trip inspection each driver performs before the bus goes out on the road, to seeing how real-time data is captured, it is clear that Durham has a very strong focus on safely transporting the students of Ottumwa.”
A Durham spokeswoman told STN that Lazio saw demonstrations on real-time data tracking via DriveCam technology and pre-trip inspections using Zonar.
Meanwhile, Durham’s Leonard said she appreciated the time the mayor spent with her team and was proud to showcase the operation’s “continuous efforts to getting our students to school safely, on time and ready to learn.”
“Our Ottumwa team’s dedication to the safety of their students is to be commended,” she added.
