Hurricane Matthew Causes Massive Damage Along Florida Coast, Schools Closed

Schools throughout Florida have been closed due to the impact of Hurricane Matthew as it travels north along the Atlantic coast with numerous reports of flooding and high winds.

Starting Thursday and going through Friday, classes have been canceled for schools in the wake of the devastation caused by the Category 2 storm.

As Matthew’s eyewall continues its pathway up the state, 110 mph wind gusts have slammed into large swathes of coastal Southeast Florida and storm surge flooding has left much of the northeast portion of coast under water.

While residents slowly trickle back to their homes, thousands are left without electricity, which calls into question whether or not school will resume on Monday.

Weather forecasters are predicting potentially serious rainfall flooding in Georgia, South Carolina and southern North Carolina through at least Saturday night.

STN reported earlier this week that school buses in South Carolina have been used to assist in evacuation efforts ahead of the hurricane.
