Michelin Recalls Truck Tires to Fix Casing Issue

Michelin North America announced it is recalling nearly 78,000 urban bus tires that might experience of rapid air loss from weak casings. The company is also recalling some 37,000 retreaded tires that use the casings.

A set of tires affected by the NHTA recall campaign include the Michelin XZU3 LRJ, size 305/85R22.5, and the Michelin XZU2 LRJ, size 12R22.5, manufactured between Oct. 23, 2005 and Sept. 3, 2011. Another other model being recalled is the XM505 LRJ, size 305/85R22.5, produced from April 18, 2010 and May 8, 2010, Jan. 23, 2011 and Feb. 12, 2011.

Michelin explained that the casings “may experience a loss of integrity and, in some cases, have rapid air loss” that could result in a crash if the driver loses control.

Beginning on or around April 30, customers will be notified by Michelin on how to obtain replacement tires. A company spokesman told School Transportation News that the recall does not affect any school buses.
