The Ledger in Lakeland, Florida, reported that a former law enforcement officer could receive up to 49 years in prison after he pleaded no contest to DUI manslaughter and vehicular homicide, after striking students last year after they got off their school bus.
John Camfield, 49, veered onto the right shoulder of the road on April 27 near a school bus stop and hit five middle school students, one of whom died the following day from his injuries.
Authorities said the impact from Camfield’s vehicle severed 13-year-old Jaheim Robertson’s spinal chord from his brain stem. Camfield also caused minor injuries to the other students.
The former 18-year law enforcement officer then fled the scene before striking another car, where he was taken into custody.
Camfield will be sentenced on April 5.
