School Board Hopes New Incentives Help Recruit Bus Drivers

WLKY reported that officials at Bullitt County Public Schools hope to fill the empty driver’s seats in their school bus fleet by offering a range of incentives.

The Kentucky-area school board recently adopted an incentives package that allows bus drivers with 10 years of experience to earn $17.24 an hour, nearly $2 more than the old maximum for an outside driver.

“So that discourages, you know, someone that’s moving in the area, you know, or wanting to come to Bullitt County to do that, so now it enables them to bring all their years’ experience and get credit for that,” said Staci Goedde, BCPS director of transportation.

Fewer drivers can mean buses that are crowded or running late. While experienced drivers are preferred, officials say anyone can be trained in the rules of the road.

Goedde reported that 10 bus routes currently lack full-time drivers, adding that, “some of that is due to drivers being out long-term medical leaves, so that’s part of our issue.”
