Students Call for Restored Bus Services

The Elk Grove Citizen reported that student activists from a California high school are calling upon the Elk Grove Unified School District to restore busing services for their classmates, presenting their case to the Elk Grove school board.

Long walking distances, roadside hazards, criminals and unreliable Regional Transit buses were some of the hardships faced by students, one student recalling  a stranger that solicited her for prostitution while she walked to school.

“The only obstacles and tribulations that the students need to overcome should be academic and within the classroom,” said one of the student activists. “It should not be issues with safety on the way to school.”

Several board members agreed that it’s time to review the district’s busing policy after hearing the activists’ concerns about student safety. They also considered forming a committee to review busing.

“It is very disturbing we haven’t explored or reviewed this for 10 years,” said the board president. “I, as a board member, don’t like to see business go on as usual.”
