Virginia School Bus Driver Killed in Transportation Yard

A bus driver for Prince William County Public Schools was killed when a school bus backed out of a service bay, reports NBCWashington.com.

Richard Lee Proffitt, 62, was standing directly behind the school bus when the incident took place about 7:30 a.m. Monday at the McCuin Transportation Center in Bristow, Virginia, according to police. Proffitt was a seven-year veteran of the district, and his wife and daughter also drive for Prince William County, but are based at a different lot.

Other school bus drivers were preparing to leave the lot when Proffitt was struck. The district had delayed school startup by two hours due to weather.

Investigations continue, and no charges had been filed against the 60-year-old driver of the bus that struck Proffitt. But police told reporters that the bus appeared to be in working order.

Prince William County has backup cameras on its Type A school bus, but not on its conventional buses, like the one that was involved in Monday’s incident.
