AMF-Bruns Announces 1st Annual National Special Needs School Bus Driver of the Year Award

HUDSON, Ohio — AMF-Bruns of America, a global leader in wheelchair and occupant securements since 1958, announced that Tammy Cummings, a special needs bus driver, is the winner of the annual AMF-Bruns National Special-Needs School Bus Driver Of The Year Award. She works for the Greenville County School System in South Carolina.

As a special-needs driver and trainer with a special-needs child, Tammy was directly involved in a head-on collision in which a tractor trailer crossed the double line, spun out of control hitting her school bus. Tammy stayed calm and stopped the bus to lessen the force of the collision. She had the wherewithal to keep the children in the bus to avoid downed power lines.

“Tammy Cummings is a true hero,” said Peter Haarhuis, AMF-Bruns CEO. “Making life-saving decisions under the most challenging of circumstances is a true gift.”

Tammy was recognized for this achievement and received her award this week at a special ceremony held at her school district.

AMF-Bruns received a tremendous response from candidates across North America. As Peter noted: “Choosing one winner among this extraordinary group of candidates was a difficult undertaking. Each nominated bus driver could have easily won the award. We thank everyone for their nominations.”

Nominations for the annual AMF-Bruns National Special-Needs School Bus Driver Of The Year Award will be accepted after January 1, 2019. For more information, including the criteria and application deadline, go to: www.amfbrunsamerica.com/award
