MACEDONIA, Ohio — Trainers, transportation managers and superintendents across the country have raved about the School Bus Safety Company’s Driver Training Course. Now there is assistance in obtaining this course being provided by several insurance trusts and school risk groups that see the value and potential for lower accident rates and savings.
According to Lee Gaby, Executive Director of the Public School Risk Institute, “More that 100 groups exist that may be able to purchase the Course for their members or offer credits in their financing structure. Groups that do this are very likely to find highly supportive members and experience immediate positive impact on driver behavior. It looks like a win-win to me.”
“This is a great opportunity” says Jeff Cassell from the School Bus Safety Company. “There’s never been a better example of an ounce of prevention delivering a pound of cure.” Recently, seven forward-thinking state insurance pools have come forward to purchase the course for their members: These include:
- Georgia School Boards Association
- Nevada Public Agency Insurance Pool
- Montana School Group Insurance Authority
- Maryland Association of Boards of Education
- Virginia Municipal League Insurance Programs
They recognize that the course makes kids safer and, in the process, saves them money. Now, dozens of other state pools are looking closely at using this course and are in the process of evaluating its use. SBSC believes it’s only a matter of time before they too help their members and make the kids in their states safer.
“I would encourage other school risk pools to share this program with their members. When we presented it to our members, they voted unanimously to fund the training” said Ann Wiswell from the Nevada Public Agency Insurance Pool.
Trudy Sowar, Director of Risk Management for the Georgia School Boards Association commented that their association wants to help their members with all aspects of risk management. “If we can help districts reduce risk, they have fewer losses and that puts more dollars into the classroom. This course is outstanding and we’re pleased to provide it to our district members in Georgia.”
Jeff Cassell, VP of District Operations for SBSC said, “This just makes so much sense. The districts own the pools and it’s always better to invest in preventing accidents rather than paying for losses. Almost every accident is caused by unsafe driver behaviors, so it follows that the best way to reduce accidents is to change those behaviors. The Driver Training Course does that. It leads to safer drivers and lower losses.”
