A school bus carrying students home from a Kansas City-area charter school burst into flames Tuesday afternoon after the vehicle started making “a screaming, loud noise,” reports KBMC News 9.
A call came in at about 4:15 p.m. local time that a school bus was on fire and students were being evacuated on the 3600 block of E. 55th Street, the new station reports. Based on a news chopper flying overhead, students were shown standing in a group away from the bus as firefighters attended to the burning bus.
In all, 33 students were on board. None were injured. The bus driver told reporters that a loud, screaming noise precipitated the smell of smoke and then the bus bursting into flames. The driver added that at that point the brakes did not work and the bus started rolling.
KBMC said a “Good Samaritan” from across the street heard the nose and saw the front end of the bus catch fire before he started helping evacuate the students.
