Roundup: A Booted Bus, Time Changes and More

A bus from the Philadelphia School District (PSD) found itself stranded, but not due to traffic or weather or disrepair—it was booted, leaving it immobilized at the curb. With its front door swung open, there was a big yellow boot on the front left tire. According to the Philadelphia Parking Authority, vehicles with three or more unpaid parking tickets or red light tickets are eligible to be booted after their owners receive a series of notices. The PSD has so far remained quiet on the whole situation.

The Durham Public Schools Board of Education in North Carolina has an August deadline to make a decision that could affect more than 33,000 students—changing the start of the school day. Most area middle and high schools start at 7:30 a.m., with elementary schools starting at 9 a.m. While the board has discussed pushing back start times for years, the board must now narrow its options, or risk not having enough school buses when school starts in August 2016.

There is a desperate need for people to fill jobs for a Washington state school district, mostly bus drivers. Richland School District needs a handful of drivers. Another district in Kennewick requires roughly 30. And Pasco needs 50 more bus drivers before the fall. Officials believe an improvement economy has hindered filling these part-time positions, as people want full-time work.

The Drew Central School District was one of six school districts recognized by the Arkansas Association of Pupil Transportation (AAPT) for bus safety, based on: quality of school bus inspections, quality of school bus maintenance records; cleanliness of the school bus fleet, and quality of the preventative maintenance program. The award comes the distinction of having one of the safety bus fleets in the state.
