Tyler Technologies’ Versatrans Launches RFID-Based Student Tracking

Tyler Technologies announced that its new Versatrans Student Tracking product is available for order and installation in school buses to assist student transporters in identifying which students got off at which stops and when.

The student tracking uses 13.56 MHz RFID technology to scan compatible student ID cards and to pass the data from an on-board HID iClass “contactless” reader from Honeywell through Tyler’s Telematics GPS Hardware. School bus operators need to also be using Versatrans Onscreen and VersaTrans Routing and Planning.

ID cards need only be waved within 3 inches to 4.75 inches from the reader for a successful transmission, and operators may install multiple scanners on the bus, for example near the main loading doors and . Data is displayed on the student screen or in report form, and dispatchers can retrieve a list of the past scans for any student. Tyler said no personal data is stored on the swiped cards or in the reader, and student data is encrypted and authenticated for secure transmission.

A company spokeswoman said school bus operators have several options for installing the equipment. They can contract with third-party installers or utilize Tyler’s self-install program, which trains school district or bus company staff on how to install the hardware. Tyler can also work directly with school bus manufacturers to install the student tracking system on the assembly line as part of an new order.

Versatrans’ Student Tracking comes with a lifetime warranty.
